Subject Matter Experts: BE PROUD!
5k loves you just how you are
It’s not uncommon for a training & development professional to “fall” into this line of work. The transition from doer to teacher makes complete sense – subject matter expertise and organizational knowledge are invaluable, and who has more credibility training others than a person with first-hand knowledge and experience?
BUT logic and benefits notwithstanding, learning professionals are expected to know everything about certain topics, and certain topics about everything. It’s essential to understand instructional design concepts, learning theory, and increasingly more cognitive science, graphic design, change management, and information technology.
While many positions also demand a knowledge of classroom facilitation, project management, leadership, industrial/organizational psychology, and data analytics. These are significant fields of study, as evidenced by the fact people can (and do) pursue doctorates on the subjects. So, where does one even begin?
In addition to partnering with 5k Courses (cheap plug), learning & development professionals should practice and appropriate the same integrated talent management practices, principles, and techniques that they preach.
A) Use the strengths-based approach.
Know your strengths and invest in others' strengths; get people with the right strengths on your team.
If you are lucky enough to have people that GET IT – offer vast insight into the job/topic being trained and are effective at sharing – why let them struggle with the technical skills and lose precious time?
B) Provide a safe-to-fail environment.
No one ever gets thrown to the wolves in the corporate training realm [thinly-veiled sarcasm], so everyone has a chance to hone their eLearning development and instructional design skills in a learn-at-your-own-pace, fail-safe environment [more of that sarc].
Doing some business with us could alleviate the likelihood of training emergencies and prevent unrealistic course development cycles where quality suffers.
C) Solution Prioritization Matrix – Pull out that good ol’ Six Sigma/Project Management/Continuous Improvement toolkit.
Priorities often change fast in the L&D world, and nothing’s a priority if everything’s a priority. But we get it; EVERYTHING has to get done (somehow).
5k is happy to discuss your current training strategy, ongoing programs, and upcoming initiatives to help you get it all done. 5k and your company are like tag team partners – we got your back if you’re getting pinned, and our DOUBLETEAM MOVES ARE SWEET!
5k Courses can work with you to produce finished Storyline, Lectora, or Captivate courses while you focus on other important things like content gathering, program/curriculum management, change management, continuing education, or any of the million other things L&D professionals get tasked with.
