5k loves you just how you are

It’s not uncommon for a training & development professional to “fall” into this line of work. The transition from doer to teacher makes complete sense – subject matter expertise and organizational knowledge are invaluable, and who has more credibility training others than a person with first-hand knowledge and experience?

BUT logic and benefits notwithstanding, learning professionals are expected to know everything about certain topics, and certain topics about everything. It’s essential to understand instructional design concepts, learning theory, and increasingly more cognitive science, graphic design, change management, and information technology.

While many positions also demand a knowledge of classroom facilitation, project management, leadership, industrial/organizational psychology, and data analytics. These are significant fields of study, as evidenced by the fact people can (and do) pursue doctorates on the subjects. So, where does one even begin?
